Skid Row 

Skid Row is a neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles, California. The area is officially known as Central City East. In the 2019 census, the population of the area was 4,757. Skid Row has one of the most stable numbers (about 4,200-8,000) of homeless people in the United States and has been known for its high number of homeless people since the 1930s. The long record of targeted police raids for urban planning and the fight against homelessness makes Skid Row one of the unique neighborhoods in Los Angeles. It covers 50 urban blocks (2.71 square kilometers) directly from downtown Los Angeles, CA; Skid Row is located between three streets to the north, Seventh Street to the south, Alameda Street to the east, and Main Street to the west.

Culture 

Skid Row is home to many artists. Due to its proximity to areas such as the Historical Center and the Arts District, Skid Row often hosts events that cross regional boundaries. In 2019, an organization acting as the Los Angeles Department of Poverty began offering art services in and around Skid Row, mainly classes and exhibitions. Los Angeles Times reporter Margaret Gray said that the audience “felt like they were part of the family in a way” as the actors took on the scene and noted that “while many charities focus on collecting and supporting the homeless, the LAPD tries to remember them. special people, to empower them to unite and take responsibility for their area and the health and safety of each other.” Since 2009, the organization has prepared its Festival for all Skid artists. “Volunteers created the ‘Skid Row City Limits Mural’ to express people’s thoughts about the past and the current state of the area.” The ‘Good Neighbor Mural’ is another work of Skid Row art designed to make housing a right for all. The Skid Row City Limits Mural is an 18-foot by 50-foot mural on San Julian Street, created in 2014. The mural displays a map that shows the official limits of Skid Row and what official-distance lines and city lines are.
